Athletics Success On An Individual Basis

Lakers School went to the District Athletics Championships at the Prince of Wales Stadium, Cheltenham, hoping for individual success for its athletes, with the opportunity to compete for the Forest of Dean at the County Championships on the 7th June on offer for those who gained the qualifying times or distances.

The boys had teams in all 3 age categories; Minor Boys (Yr7), Junior Boys (Yrs 8&9) and the Inter Boys (Yr 10), but due to the number of athletes being limited by the number of seats on the coach, most competitors needed to do 2 events, which is a tough challenge for any athlete.

Being one of the smallest schools numerically in the FOD always makes the individual sports more difficult to win, so the team competition is secondary to our athletes gaining personal success.  As a school we came 4th out of the 6 schools competing.

The following boys won their event and are District champions:

Shot Putt – JB – Harvey Baldwin 9m 61cm

Shot Putt – IB – Luke Jones 10m 36cm

Javelin – MB – Kian Skidmore 17m 29cm

200m – MB – Joe Chandler 29.84 sec

1500m – IB – Sam Cooper 5.12 min

Harvey, Luke and Sam all now have the opportunity to compete at the County Championships and to represent the FOD at athletics.  Joe Akers in Year 11 will also be competing in the 100m and 200m on the 7th June. We wish all the boys well and hope they do themselves and the school proud.
