The year 9 and 10 mixed softball team travelled to Dene Magna to compete against the Forest schools in the District event.
This was only the first competitive match of the season for Lakers softball and we had a relatively inexperienced team. This didn’t phase our students though as they started against Dene Magna ‘A’ confidently in the field, limiting the scorers. A superb diving catch from Kane Evans finished the Dene Magna innings and kept them at just 5 points. Despite a nervy start with the bat, some superb hitting from Luke Jones and Jamie Mee took the pressure off and at the half way point, the scores were at 5 a piece. Lakers looked on top as they took to the field for the second innings and held their opponents at just 3 points with the final batter to hit. Unfortunately for us, the final batter hit big and all 4 base runners were able to get in. Despite our best efforts, we fell 1 point short in the final innings when we couldn’t quite get our final batter home. A superb opening game.
We went on to play Dene Magna ‘B’ and Wyedean in the final two matches. Again, we fielded tactically and credit must go to Robyn Marsh for her superb bowling which kept the pressure on the opposing batters at all times. When we took to the bat, we always looked in control and neither game ever looked like it would be anything but a Lakers win.
Lakers 11 – 12 Dene Magna ‘A’
Lakers 11 – 8 Dene Magna ‘B’
Lakers 13 – 8 Wyedean
Lakers finished in second place and have earned themselves a place at the School Games County Finals in June, to represent the Forest of Dean. A fantastic achievement-well done.
