Year 11 Girls Are Top 5 In Gloucestershire Football

The year 11 girls football team held their own at the County event and represented Lakers School and The Forest of Dean with pride.

Challenging the top teams from Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud and the Cotswolds is never going to be easy, especially being such a small school. Having earned their place at the event after beating the Forest Schools in the District round, the girls were confident and ready to take on their opponents. Lakers made a bright start in their first game against Kingshill, dominating possession and territory. Two excellent goals from Holly Thomas saw Lakers take the win. The following two games were tough, but Lakers held their own and never looked out of place. Despite drawing these two matches, to watch they definitely edged their opposition in ability and it was a shame we were unable to convert our opportunities.

A semi final place came down to the final match against a Stroud High team who had beaten all of their previous opposition. We needed a point to take us through and therefore a draw would have been enough to qualify. Again, the Lakers team never looked a beaten team and threw all that they had at the opposition. Some great goal keeping from Olivia Reed kept us in the match after a superb strike from an opponent. It was 5 minutes from time when a controversial decision by the referee gave Lakers a mountain to climb. Despite Olivia Reed getting behind a second shot at goal, which from our position she appeared to prevent the ball from crossing the line, the referee awarded the goal to the opposition.

We continued to attack and opened up chances, but sadly were unable to pull back a goal that we certainly deserved. This result saw us finish third in the group and left us a point short of making the semi final. Lakers finished 5th overall (out of 10), which is a very worthy result against the best teams in the County. Well done to all of the girls involved. Another fantastic year for girls football at Lakers School.
