The year 7 girls football team travelled to Newent on Tuesday 10th March to compete in the District Under 12’s Final.
With little experience together as a team they knew it was likely to be a tough match, but spirits and hopes were high. Lakers started well and dominated from the first whistle putting constant pressure on the Newent defence. Tia Watts and Maisie Beach linked up well in attack, creating numerous opportunities which we unfortunately couldn’t convert into the back of the net. With 2 minutes to play before half time, a great clearance from Kayleigh Edwards in defence found Tia Watts who sidestepped the next defender and took a shot a goal. A great save from the Newent keeper was palmed away to the feet of Maisie Beach who calmly slotted the ball into the net. Half time Lakers 1-0 Newent.
Lakers appeared to suffer with tired legs at the start of the second half and allowed Newent in to their half. A couple of excellent saves from Toni Tyler prevented Newent from gaining an equaliser and kept Lakers in front. The last couple of minutes of play saw Lakers spring back to life and open up the pitch again, attacking down the wings. Unfortunately, as in the first half, they were unable to convert any chances and Maisie Beach’s first half goal was to be the only goal of the match.
The win for Lakers saw them take the District Title and gained them a place at the County Event to represent the Forest of Dean.
