Lakers year 11 girls travelled to The Dean Academy to compete in the Under 16 District Football event.
Having won the title last year, they were looking to retain their position at the top of girls football in the Forest of Dean. Their job was made slightly easier, when most other Forest Schools pulled out of the tournament after being unable to provide numbers for a team. It came down to a battle between Lakers and the host school. This was known territory, as it has been ourselves and The Dean Academy who have fought for the top spot in this age category for the last three years.
Lakers dominated possession throughout the match, putting their opponents through their paces. Lakers kept the pressure on in their attacking half and their attempts paid off after Holly Thomas tucked away a super corner kick from Kirsten Challis, minutes before the half time whistle.
During the second half, Olivia Reed pulled out an excellent low save to keep Lakers in the lead after The Dean Academy caught us on the break. Another moment of skill from Holly Thomas saw her take the ball past three defenders and put the ball into the back of the net. An excellent win for Lakers sees the retain their District title and earn a place at the county event next week to compete against the best from Gloucester, Cheltenham and Stroud on behalf of the Forest of Dean.
