Football: Y10’s Narrowly Miss Out To Newent

Year 10 travelled to Newent on the 3rd Feb to play a strong Newent side who we beat convincingly 3-1 last year.

With this in mind confidence was high and Year 10 anticipated a good result. The game was evenly played in the first half with some great link up play on both sides. Lakers looked the more dangerous side and could’ve easily scored two in quick succession. Jamie Mee had a shot blocked on the line, Luke Jones hit the bar with a decent strike from outside the box and two further chances failed to test the keeper. With mostly Lakers in possession a quick break from Newent saw them score against the run of play. A couple of minutes later saw Lakers give possession away cheaply in our own box, Newent capitalised and put themselves two up. With five minutes of the first half left panic set in- the boys decided to swap themselves around leaving no structure and plenty of free Newent players.

The last five minutes were a complete mess and Lakers were lucky to stay at only 2-0. After a stern half-time talk order was restored and the structure back in place, Lakers began the second half with the confidence that they had in the first 20 minutes of the first half. Lakers dominated possession, winning the ball all across the pitch and then retaining it. Some great challenges from Dec Fissenden, Charlie Barnett and Corey Powles helped win the ball, with Mostyn Wood and Harry Stacey making good use of possession. Lakers pressed forward winning multiple corners but couldn’t convert them to goals. Finally after 15 minutes Lakers’ possession paid off when a speculative shot from Nathan Whittington caught the Newent goalkeeper out. Things were looking up until a superb solo goal from Newent took the wind out of our sales again- leaving the score 3-1. Lakers did continue to press on and were rewarded with another goal from a cool finish from Luke Jones. The score finished 3-2 to Newent and Lakers travelled home disappointed knowing that they could’ve took the win if it wasn’t for moments of madness and sloppy errors. Wyedean at home next week, we go again!!
