Lakers Year 7 “A” took on the District Champions Newent at 8-a-side football on the hosts AstroTurf.
Lakers started well and played with confidence. An early goal from Tomas Elsmore helped add to the confidence and Lakers found their grove quickly. The boys kept possession and played at a pace and tempo that caused Newent many problems. A Cameron Mills drive from distance took a wicked deflection off a Newent defenders face and wrong footed the goalkeeper to make the score 2-0 to Lakers (I’m sorry Cameron but that’s going down as an own goal). Just before half time Lakers extended their lead to 3-0 when Brennan Baldwin finished off a good sweeping move involving several players.
A half time change in defence saw the second half take on a completely different picture, Lakers lost their shape and struggled to keep the ball, suddenly the boys started to moan and with that the boys dropped their work rate and let the opposition have the ball. As frustration levels increased the boys started to play as individuals rather than a team. Newent got a goal back after some naive defensive marking and the panic alarm sounded, Lakers lost all control and grip on the game and hung on to win 3-2.
Despite getting the win against the District Champions – the atmosphere at the end felt like a defeat – as a team we were so much better than we showed in the second half, and more worryingly it was brought about by players looking to blame each other. This is something the boys will need to learn from and fast if they are to meet their early promise and potential.
