Lakers Suffer From “One Of Those Days” In Narrow Defeat

The Lakers Year 7 “B” team took on the District Champions Newent in an 8-a-side football game on the AstroTurf at Newent. Lakers started in the worse possible fashion conceding a goal in the first minute.

The team playing together for the first time looked nervous and took a while before they played with any structure or confidence.  Hayden Edey stepped in as goalkeeper at the very last minute and despite finding the going tough pulled off a couple of good saves to keep us in the game early on.  Rio Burson Griffiths alongside Jake Morgan upfront looked lively and threatened throughout.  Rio scored a nice team goal following a good period of possession and interplay that involved William Holmes and Adam Rawlings in the build up to level the score at 1-1.  Defensively Lakers looked fragile and Newent took advantage scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead.  Joe Rook, Cameron Smith and Luke Thomas played things simple and helped us maintain some possession, with more of the ball Lakers looked more dangerous, Coran Brace and Joe Chandler started to find their ways into the game.  Jake Morgan pulled a goal back and it looked like the tide had changed.  Lakers started to pepper the opposition goal but despite a huge number of shots we couldn’t beat the Newent keeper (pictured below) who will never have a better day “at the office” than today.

Against the run of play Newent regained their two goal lead, after a lapse in concentration in defence.  Man of the match Rio Burson Griffiths then scored the goal of the game with a quality individual finish.  Despite further bombardments of the opposition goal, Lakers simply couldn’t get the much deserved equaliser.  The game finished 4-3 to Newent, but a draw would have been by far the fairest score, but that’s sport.  The boys will learn from today and hopefully we can iron out some issues with our defending and come away with the win next time around.
